Writing was very popular in Japan, especially with women. Most men in Japan wrote in Chinese, therefore most of the early Japanese writings were written by women. One of the notable  writters was Lady Murasaki Shikibu, who wrote The Tale of Genji. The story is about a prince looking for love, and during his search he meets women of many different social classes. Lady Murasaki Shikibu's writings are said to be clear and simple, but graceful. She was able to describe her characters and settings with great detail all while staying easy to understand.
